Rites of Passage Train-the-Trainer training is offered in a hands-on approach that will provide practioners with a solid background in "Rites of Passage" programming, from a culturally responsive perspective, for adults working with youth. It offers the following:
A historical overview of ROP, including it's African original philosophy;
Data and research on the effectiveness of ROP programming
Practical ROP applications for use in the African American community;
Resources and tools specific to different ages, that incorporate appropriate age development
"How-to" kit for starting and running your own Rites of Passage Program;
On-going technical assistance
Membership in ROP network
Learning Outcomes & Practical Applications:
Rites of Passage Train-the-Trainer participants will be able to:
Develop and implement their own ROP program;
Incorporate specific culturally specific strategies (from an Afrocentric paradigm) into current programming;
Identify targeted approaches for use with African American males to increase their attachment to learning and literacy;
Learn strategies to increase acceptance of ROP within your field, or areas of expertise (health, education, youth development, or criminal justice)
Operationalization: Participants will be grouped and instructed to plan 12 weeks of sessions with youth using Dare to Be King and Let the Circle be Unbroken Rites of Passage curricula.
Groups will demonstrate to large group their entire plan: Introduction, welcome, icebreakers, team building, Common core aligned lesson plans, structured youth planning, structured youth choice, and structured youth reflection.
